THERE'S A NEW KIND OF SUPERMAN COMIN'! (DC House Ad, 1969)

This striking DC house ad trumpeted the end of the Weisinger era as editor and heralded the changes made by his incoming replacements, most especially Julius Schwartz. In stories by talents like the future Green Arrow/Green Lantern team of Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams, Superman lost a good portion of his power, making him a more manageable being. In trade, he no longer was vulnerable to Kryptonite (he once ate some to prove that point,) and gained new villains and supporting cast members. These changes were not reflected in the non-Scwartz titles, and few survived past the 1970s. John Byrne reinstated many of them in his reboot of the franchise, the "Man of Steel" mini-series, which reigned for the better part of fifteen years.
